General:
Annual herb from a taproot; stems 10-50 cm tall, simple or branched especially below, hairy, sometimes glandular, 4-angled.
Leaves:
Opposite, broadly elliptic, 1.5-5 cm long, 5-20 mm wide, length less than 4X width, tips rounded to somewhat pointed; stalks less than 5 mm long.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of short, one-sided, axillary clusters; corollas tubular, blue, the tube 2-3.5 mm long, curved gradually upward, 5-lobed, the lowest 2-3.5 mm long, the other 4 about equal and slightly more than 1/2 as long as the lowest; calyces 1.5-3 mm long, the teeth about equal, more than twice the length of tube, hairy, long-pointed.
Fruits:
Nutlets, 4, joined in lower 1/3, irregularly ridged.
